Homebrew
Getting homebrew running using the Homebrew Channel
Preperation on modified Wiis with firmware below 3.3 (if you do not know whether your Wii is modified - then it’s probably not, the instructions for unmodded Wiis will always work):
In case you have a Wii with a drivechip, please ignore everything below. You neither need an SD card nor Zelda, you’ll only need a DVD burner. Simply download an ISO for your region from the HackMii download page, burn it and insert it into your Wii. Select the disc channel and select “Start”. Please continue with the Installation and Use section then.
Preparation of all other Wiis:
First of all. What you need is an SD Card, Legend Of Zelda - Twilight Princess (Wii version, any region) and an SD card reader for your PC (many PCs have them included nowadays!). Please note that you’ll need Zelda just once, therefore a borrowed version does fine. Enter your Wii options menu and select Data Management - continue with Save Data and Wii. Insert an SD card now. Select your Legend of Zelda - Twilight Princess savegame and then select “Copy” to copy it over to the SD card.
When it’s copied to your SD, please leave the Wii in that menu and eject the SD card. Insert it into your PC SD card reader. Open the folder of your savegame there - it should be private\wii\title\rzdX - while X should be:
- P: European version
- E: North American version
- J: Japanese version
There should be a file called data.bin inside there - rename it (if you do not rename it and continue you might lose your complete process in Twilight Princess) to whatever you like.

Now open the Homebrew Channel webpage - download the newest Twilight Hack there (1 Beta 1 as I write this - You’ll require the special 1 Beta 2 if your Wii is already updated to 3.4 - but DO NOT use 1 beta 2 for 3.3 and below). It will contain 3 savegame folders for each game region - please check the backside of your package for the corresponding version for your Zelda version. Now copy over the file for your version into the savegame folder and rename it to data.bin .

Now go to the root directory of your SD card. You’ll also be able to download the “.ELF” from the Homebrew Channel webpage. Simply unpack the file boot.elf from the archive (with WinRar you’ll first have to unpack the_homebrew_channel_beta_7.tar-1) in the root directory of your SD card.

Great! Now re-insert the SD card into your Wii! Select your Twilight Princess Save game again. This time you have to select Erase to delete from your Wii system memory. In the upper right area select “SD Card” and you’ll see the icon of the Wiibrew loader. Once you select it, it will say “Twilight Hack” - select Copy!
Okay, you’re set. Go back to the Wii menu.. and insert Zelda! In the savegame selection, select the first savegame - saying “Twilight Hack”.
Welcome to Zelda. Now simply go forward and talk to the guy you’re seeing. The game will crash and you will see a text message asking you to install the Homebrew Channel.
Installation and use
Once you’ve started installation, you’ll be presented a warning screen.
If you accept: The homebrew channel will now be installed on your console. You’ll find it in your Wii menu!
Okay, everything’s ready. You can download some test application at The Homebrew Channel Download page - simply copy the apps folder in hbc_apps.tar.gz into the root folder of the SD card. To use WiiRd - we can get to that now - so return to the “Start with WiiRd” page!
