Ocarina
July 29, 2008 – 9:08Ocarina is the stand-alone code handler - whoops.. two posts later I said it wouldn’t come. Yes, that’s what I was convinced of. But here it is…
Ocarina is a very simple Wii application for your homebrew channel. What it does? Start a game.. but there’s a twist of course.
Ocarina checks the GAME ID.. like RZDP01 for Zelda Twilight Princess (PAL). Then it checks the inserted SD card whether it can find a cheat code file for that game: in this case it would have to be name [sd]:\codes\rzdp01.gct .
To create GCT files.. a PC application is bundled in the package. This application is coming with 2 example files. rsbe.txt and rsbp.txt (Smash Brothers NTSC-U and PAL respectively). Using the File menu you can open, them and select the cheats you want.
Note that unlike an Action Replay you can modify codes with XXXXXXXX inside them.. it will always ask you to store modifications to its application memory I added this question so that people do not cry if a code is messed up - the actual cheat code file will not be modified until you save it in the app.
Once you’re done selecting codes: click on “Export to GCT”… and the rest should be pretty straight forward! Insert your SD card.

The package is seperated in a PC folder (PC client) and HBC (Homebrew channel)… put the stuff in its folders.. and they’re happy!
Some release notes:
-Due to some bugs, games cannot access SD cards anymore when they are booted via Ocarina.. Brawlers who do stage builder stuff or screenshots.. please store them into your Wii memory and copy them over!

Awwww, I bought a SD Card just for Brawl, and knowing that I won’t be able to access my stuff on my SD Card when I use Ocarina for Brawl kinda sucks.
I’m literally out of space on my Wii, I hope you guys can fix this.

I am pretty sure, the issue can be fixed.. some code has to be checked.. so far I am sorry but no, so far it doesn’t work.
However, it’s being checked!

So where exactly can we get codes for other games?
By Frankula on Jul 30, 2008
http://www.usbgecko.com/forums should be your start page!
By Link on Jul 30, 2008
So, is there/will there be some kind of database of cheat codes? I heard someone mention converting action replay codes but there are no action replay codes for the wii…?!
By adamscybot on Jul 30, 2008
Oh never mind, just found it at http://usbgecko.com/codes/. It’s lacking codes though…? I guess it will grow overtime. I suppose you need a USBGecko to find the memory locations.
By adamscybot on Jul 30, 2008
I am pretty sure the data base will grow. And yes, you’ll unfortunately need a USB Gecko to make your own codes!

Hmm… Link, there is some stuff I’d love to do with this, do you have the source?
By comex on Jul 31, 2008
Hmm. will there ever be a AR to GC converter? Because AR is way bigger.
By Dykam on Aug 1, 2008
@comex: the source of the PC app will be released shortly!
By Link on Aug 4, 2008
@Dykam: AR to GC? There is no Action Replay for Wii. I realize you probably want to convert Gamecube Action Replay codes to the Ocarina structure but what’s the point? Ocarina is for Wii codes only and therefore all Action Replay for Gamecube codes are useless!

A question: does this modify the RAM only as the game is starting or while it runs? I would think that if it only works when the game starts it would get overwritten when, for example, a new character is chosen in Brawl. On the other hand, if it works while the game is running, shouldn’t it be possible to write a simple app that could provide a RAM dump in-game, to help people without USBgeckos develop cheat codes?
Sorry if this is a stupid question; I really don’t know what is possible with Wii homebrew.

Oh, also: Intel Mac users with Leopard can run the program though Darwine (http://thisismyinter.net/?p=47) with no problems. Just “store to file” and name it “gameID.gct”, where gameID is whatever is shown by the program, and then copy to sd/codes/gameID.gct.
By deltadesu on Aug 4, 2008
the program modifies the RAM all the time.. it’s running as a 4 KB code patch with the game and modifies everything..
for Intel Mac users.. nice tip! I’ll soon release the source of the PC app, so I guess native ports might be possible!

Hello. Um… I tried to use one of codes on WiFi compatible game but it didn’t work online. Do you think you could make it work?
By Daisy-Chan on Aug 6, 2008
The pc app should be like Action Replays Code Manager and the homebrew should be able to allow you to select which codes you want to run.

Why do you need to cheat to beat people online?
By Rapfnny on Aug 7, 2008
A Wii side code selection is much too hard to write..
For Wi-Fi codes.. I didn’t comment on that. Cheating online works if other people have the same codes enabled!

Hi Link thank for your apps ! That’s cool
i made the french language file of the pc code manager. If you’re interest to add to your file let me know! I’ll send you.

There is something you must understand. I just wanted to make the hackers to taste their own medicine by pay them back big time but it seems like impossible dream…
By Daisy-Chan on Aug 9, 2008
Thanks for doing this!
By masterluigin on Aug 9, 2008
Erm, it’s probably not going to be possible for most games. SSBB, at the very least, sends only button presses, meaning it shouldn’t be possible to cheat with this or any other application. If it was the game you were talking about, I’m pretty sure the “hackers” are just good players.
By deltadesu on Aug 10, 2008
When you say “cannot access SD cards”, you mean, only as long as the game is booted via Ocarina, right? Or does this somehow make the game unable to load from SD cards even if you boot it normally?
It seems like a silly question, but I’m really paranoid about all this Wii hacking business. @.@
By vgmoose on Aug 11, 2008
yes of course, games can read and write the SD cards if you boot them normally.. just if you boot them together with Ocarina it won’t work!
By Link on Aug 12, 2008
I’m a little confused. I will need the USB gecko to make my own codes. (I’m not that good with computers) But will I need one to just run codes?
By Rikuto on Aug 14, 2008
Hm, nevermind. I found just read the instructions again. completely missed it.
By Rikuto on Aug 14, 2008
No, I was actually talking about the one and only Mario Kart Wii! I’ve lost some of the races only because they had infinite item power cheat enabled on WiFi somehow. I just wanted to pay them back next time I matched up with them and there is nothing more or less to it.

This “Code Manager” program doesn’t work in Wine. Please compile a Linux version, or release the source code, or something so that people not using Winblows can use this program.
